While visiting Washington, DC in late December I saw a report on ebird.org that a Bald Eagle
had been spotted in East Potomac Park. I went there early the next morning and found a pair of
eagles perched in the highest tree in the park overlooking the golf course near the southeast end
of the island. Their perch gave them a great view of the river and was about one mile from the
Jefferson Memorial located at the other end of the island. Unfortunately, it was overcast that
morning and the clouds gave a poor background for the eagles. However, while photographing them
I noticed movement in the green behind the eagles and saw a Red Fox stretching his legs with a
sleepy look on his face. I came back just after sunrise the next morning and found the eagles in
the same tree underneath a brillant blue sky. After taking some shots of them I moved to get a
different angle to the eagles. As I turned, I saw the fox watching me from behind a frost-covered
mound of dirt. He let me take a few quick shots of him before he trotted away to go do whatever
foxes do on a cold winter morning. I turned back to the eagles just in time to capture the image
displayed here of one eagle taking off behind his mate. It always is fun to get unexpected bonuses
like these eagles and the fox whenever I'm out in the natural world, or even, as in this case, very
near the heart of our nation's capital.
