San Francisco Bay is one of the most recognizable landforms on
earth. This image includes Half-Moon Bay, the San Andreas Lakes (formed by
the San Andreas fault), Golden Gate Park, Alcatraz, the Golden Gate Bridge,
Stinson Beach, essentially all of the upper and lower bays, and the lower ends
of the Napa and Sonoma valleys. The ocean swells display an interesting pattern
of reflection and diffraction while the bay itself is relatively smooth. The
prison building on Alcatraz is clearly visible in this image as are the San
Francisco waterfront and Fisherman's Wharf. The red color corresponds to
vegatation. A different color scheme is displayed in
SFBayGreen that is closer to visually true
color at the cost of slightly lower spatial resolution.
The area covered by this image is approximately 37x63 miles. A
full-resolution crop of the image file is available
here that shows the detail present in
the full image print. |
