This image shows Great Exuma, Long Island, Rum Cay, and Conception
Island. The underwater formations at the western edge of the image
date from the Pleistocene when the ocean level was much lower than
it is today. They sit next to the 6000 ft. deep Tongue of
the Ocean and when they were above sea-level, erosion formed the
channels and gulleys visible here before being covered by the rising
ocean waters. Also note the channels in the underwater sand carved
by ocean currents that are being squeezed between narrow gaps in the
cays around the main islands.
The area covered by this image is approximately 130x92 miles.
