New York on a late summer day -- a clear sky means a great day for remote
sensing. This image shows New York City and surrounding areas. Manhatten is
easily identified with Central Park showing prominently. South of Central Park
is a building that casts the longest shadow in this image: the Empire State
Building. In lower Manhatten can be seen the empty space where the World Trade
towers once stood. Across the harbor are Ellis Island and Liberty Island, symbols
of hope and freedom to all, including my great-grandfather, who came here willing
to work hard to create a new life with freedom and opportunity.
The area covered by this image is approximately 75x59 miles. A
full-resolution crop of the image file is available
here that shows the detail present in
the full image print. This image is also available with a color scheme that
emphasizes red. Note: this image is cropped from a much
larger image. Other croppings are
possible.
