This image of the McDonnell Ranges in central Australia reveals a complex
geological history. Evident here are folded belts similar to those found in
the Anti-Atlas mountains of Morocco, spectacular
gorges such as the Finke River Gorge, formed by one of the oldest rivers in the
world, and Gosses Bluff, a 142 million year old
impact crater (compare to the younger and smaller
Upheaval Dome
in Utah).
The area covered by this image is approximately 83x104 miles. A
full-resolution crop of the image file is available
here that shows the detail present in
the full image print.
