This image is from the Tanezrouft (waterless plains) region of southern
Algeria, just south of the Psychedelic image.
Although there is evidence of erosion by water in the image, aeolian processes
are responsible for many of the features seen here since this area averages no
more than 3 inches of rainfall per year. A common misconception about the
Sahara desert is that it is mostly sand dunes. In fact, more of the Sahara is
like this: rock outcrops with some sand and a dry gravel surface that can be
very abrasive when the wind blows.
