I named this Barred Owl chick Leo because he (or she) was more adventurous than his sibling.
This shot was taken on June 19, 2014, seven weeks after fledging. On that evening, Dad was
teaching the chicks how to hunt. He retrieved some food he had stashed in a tree and dropped
it into a grassy area before flying to a nearby tree to watch his charges. Soon after, Leo
appeared, found the food, and then flew to this broken branch, seemingly unsure what to do next.
It takes longer for owl chicks to learn how to be owls than it takes most other birds to learn what
they need to survive.
